The short version
Proofr is built to be private. When you use the on-device engine, your text never leaves your computer. We don't run any servers, we don't have accounts, and we don't collect, store, sell, or share your personal data or your text. There is no analytics or tracking of any kind.
Who we are
Proofr is a Chrome extension that proofreads, rewrites, and translates text. It is developed by an independent developer (“we”, “us”). Contact: cjcarito15@gmail.com.
What data Proofr handles
Everything Proofr stores lives locally in your own browser (via Chrome storage). None of it is transmitted to us — we have no servers to send it to.
The text you select — used only to produce a rewrite. On the on-device engine it is processed locally and never sent anywhere. It is not saved or logged by Proofr.
Your settings — chosen engine and translation language, stored in your browser.
An optional Groq API key — if you choose to add one, it is stored in your browser and sent only to Groq to authenticate your own requests. We never see it.
Usage counts — a local tally of how many rewrites you've done and which styles, stored on your device to show you stats. This never leaves your machine.
On-device processing (default)
By default, Proofr uses Chrome's Built-in AI (Gemini Nano), which runs entirely on your computer. Your selected text is processed locally and is never transmitted off your device.
Optional cloud processing (Groq)
If you add a Groq API key and use the Groq engine, the text you choose to rewrite is sent directly from your browser to Groq (api.groq.com) over HTTPS to be processed, and the result is returned to you. This happens only for requests you initiate, and only when the Groq engine is selected. Proofr is not an intermediary — the request goes straight to Groq. Groq's handling of that data is governed by Groq's Privacy Policy. We recommend not selecting text that contains sensitive information when using the Groq engine.
What we do NOT do
No accounts, sign-ups, or logins.
No analytics, telemetry, tracking pixels, or advertising.
No selling or sharing of data with third parties.
No collection of browsing history or page content beyond the specific text you choose to rewrite.
Permissions, and why they're needed
Context menus & scripting / host access — to add the right-click "Proofr" option and show the result panel on the page you're using.
Storage — to remember your settings and optional API key in your browser.
Clipboard — to copy a rewrite when you click "Copy".
Children
Proofr is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect any personal information.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the date above and post the new version at this URL.
